JALANDHAR: The man accused in the hit-and-run that killed Fauja Singh — the world’s oldest marathon runner — told police he realised only later that the victim was Singh, after seeing television reports about his death.

Legendary marathoner Fauja Singh, fondly remembered as the 'Turbaned Tornado,' passed away on Monday at the age of 114 after being hit by a vehicle. The accident occurred his ancestral village in Punjab's Jalandhar.

He also shared, "I've been predominantly vegetarian my whole life. In the Sikh religion, we eat to live, not live to eat. In Punjab, the green belt of India where I'm originally from, most people eat what they grow – I attribute my longevity to simple Punjabi vegetarian foods, such as chapati, dal, sabji, and saag ."

Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, tragically died at 113 after being struck by a speeding vehicle near his home in Jalandhar. He was on his way to visit his family's eatery, a place built in memory of his late son.
