Texas redistricting efforts & California retaliation threats raise questions about democracy
This congressional redistricting fight in Texas could very well have a domino effect across the country. Governor Gregg Abbott is trying to make his friend President Trump happy by redrawing the maps to make it easier for Republicans to win five more seats in Congress and maintain control on Capitol Hill.
“Our proposed map was created using traditional redistricting criteria, consistent with guidelines laid out by the California’s Citizen Redistricting Commission,” according to a cover letter from Julie Merz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee included with the map.
But the fight is about to enter a new phase on Monday, Aug. 18. Democrats who broke quorum and left Texas, killed the first special session, and didn't show up for the start of the second special session — many believe they will Monday.
The former California governor says Trump's plan to rig Texas redistricting maps for Republicans doesn't justify his Democratic successor Gavin Newsom gerrymandering blue seats in retaliation.
